Problem: During installation, one of the following error messages appears: "Could not execute the external program A:\pc\iphotoe\iphotoe.exe" or "The file A:\pc\msoffice\moffice.ini could not be opened." The installation then aborts. Cause: This installation routine uses two floppy disks labeled TWAIN Data Source and a CD-ROM called the Application Library. During installation, the floppy disks prompt you to insert the Application Library CD and choose the letter representing the CD-ROM drive. If the CD is not in place, or if the wrong drive letter is chosen, then the installation routine will not be able to load the programs from the CD to complete the installation. IMPORTANT NOTE: A CD-ROM drive is required to install the scanner software. The floppy disks only install the TWAIN driver. The application programs iPhoto Plus, TextBridge Classic OCR and the Scanning Desktop are on the CD-ROM only. Solution: The TWAIN data source floppy disks and the Application Library CD-ROM need to be installed simultaneously and the CD-ROM drive letter must be correctly identified. Use the following steps to begin the installation: Windows 3.1x Users Follow These Steps (Windows 95/98 users click here) - Insert the TWAIN data source floppy disk number one in your floppy drive. 2. During the installation of TextBridge Classic, a series of error messages is displayed stating that the files can't be installed because they are already in use. After restarting, the computer reports "Cannot find TBMenu.exe" or the Scanning Desktop reports "OCR Engine not installed." Cause: The file MSVCRT.DLL needs to be present in the C:\Windows\system folder to properly install TextBridge Classic. MSVCRT.DLL is present in the majority of computers with Windows 95, but in those cases where it is not, TextBridge will install the program shortcuts, but not the actual program itself. Solution: The file MSVCRT.DLL needs to be present in the C:\Windows\system folder to install TextBridge Classic correctly. There are several ways to obtain it: Download: It can be downloaded from this site. The MSVCRT.DLL is contained in an executable program that will place it into the C:\Windows\system folder. After running this file, reinstall the scanner software. Copy: Some versions of the Windows 95 CD-ROM have the MSVCRT.DLL file on them, even if it is not installed in the system. To check your CD, follow these steps: - Insert your Windows 95 CD into your CD-ROM drive.
- Click the Windows 95 Start button and select Find . . . Files or folders.
- In the "Named" box, type MSVCRT.DLL
- In the "Look in" box, click the down arrow and choose your CD-ROM drive's letter from the list.
- Click "Find Now."
- If the file is located, highlight it by clicking on it once and continue with the next step. If it isn't found, you will need to either download it or call our Customer Service Department and ask them to mail it to you.
- Click the "Edit" menu and select "Copy." Close the Find window.
- Click the Start button and go to Programs. Select the Windows Explorer and start the program.
- In the left-hand window of Explorer, scroll down until you see the Windows folder and double-click it to open it.
- Locate the subfolder called System under the Windows folder and double-click it.
- Click on the "Edit" menu in the Explorer and then click "Paste." The file MSVCRT.DLL will now be copied into the Windows 95 system folder.
- Close the Explorer and reinstall your scanner software.
Note: You must set up the computer before re-installing TextBridge. The faulty installation process leaves an erroneous entry in the Registry that must be removed before re-installing the program. To clean the Registry, follow these steps. - Click on Start and select Run. Type in Regedit.
- Look for the entry labeled HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Click on the plus sign (+) next to it.
- Look for the entry labeled SOFTWARE. Double-click on this word. You will see a list of items appear below SOFTWARE. Make sure the word SOFTWARE is highlighted.
- From the pull down menu labeled Edit, choose FIND.
- Type Xerox into the "Find what" text field. Click the "Find Next" button.
- It is possible to find more entries for Xerox then just the one associated with TextBridge. The Xerox folder will appear in the left-hand window and will look like an open manila folder labeled Xerox. Delete the entry that matches this description.
Note: In the case the search function has located Registry entries for items other then TextBridge, we want to make sure we do not delete them as they are usually fonts installed on the computer. They will appear on the right-hand side. When you locate one of these entries hit the F3 key until the folder for Xerox appears on the left-hand side - Press the F3 key, this will search again for an entry for Xerox. Another folder on the left-hand side should appear. Delete this also.
- Press the F3 key again. This should complete the search of the Registry.
- After loading the patch, TextBridge should now install properly.
3. Problem: After scanning multiple images, a fatal exception error occurs in module "VXD PPSCAN" and the system must be restarted. Cause: The fatal exception error is caused by a bug in driver version 2.3. This driver is part of the CD-ROM called Scanner Solutions that has the designation Revision 95-000-20780 Rev. 1.0 printed on the lower right corner of the back of the CD cover. Solution: There is a patch called the 2.4 Driver Update that fixes the bug in driver 2.3. Check your package, because a floppy disk containing this patch is shipping with the software bundle. The disk is labeled "600 III EP Plus TWAIN 2.4 Update." If you have this disk, install it after you install the Scanner Solutions CD-ROM. If the TWAIN 2.4 update was not in your package, you can download it from this site, or call our Customer Service Department and request it. 4. Problem: During a scan attempt, the message "Watchdog caused a general protection fault in module Watchdog.exe" appears. Cause: The earliest versions of the Watchdog program had minor bugs that would cause them to shut down. Solution: Installing the TWAIN 2.2 version or later fixes these errors. These drivers can be downloaded or obtained from our Customer Service Department. You can also remove Watchdog.exe from the system and use the scanner until an updated driver is obtained. Removing Watchdog.exe in Windows 3.1x (Windows 95/98 Users click here) - From the Program Manager, locate the Main group.
- In Main, click on the File Manager icon to start the program.
- On the left-hand side of the File Manager window, scroll down until you see the folder called Windows. Double-click this folder to open it.

- Press the DEL key on your keyboard. Click the "Yes" button when asked if you want to send the file to the Recycle Bin.
- Close the Find window. The scanner will work fine without the Watchdog program.
5. Mustek is not among the scanners listed when installing TextBridge Classic. Cause: The list of scanner names you are seeing is a list of ISIS drivers. ISIS is a type of scanner driver used mainly for OCR programs. Your Mustek scanner does not use the ISIS driver type, but instead uses the TWAIN driver interface for image and OCR scanning, and therefore does not appear on the list. Solution: Follow these steps to move out of the ISIS selection screen and back to the TWAIN selection screen: - Click on the "Cancel" button.
- A gray dialog box will appear listing several choices. Click on "Setup."
- You will see a familiar dialog box and be prompted to "Choose the Type of Scanner Driver You Wish To Install."
- Choose TWAIN from the list of driver types.
- A box will display showing your TWAIN sources. Choose F/B Scanner (EPP II) from the list and click on "Select."
- TextBridge will now prompt you to test the scanner interface. This is unnecessary. Click on "Exit" to finish the installation.
- When the "Electronic Registration" window appears, you can choose to fill in the information, or click "Cancel" to finish installation.
6. Problem: Prescans are all black using TextBridge Classic in Windows 3.1x. Cause: Early versions of the TWAIN driver would cause black prescans with the Windows 3.1x version of TextBridge Classic. Solution: Driver version 2.2 combined with the 2.4 update will eliminate the black prescans in the Windows 3.1x version of TextBridge Classic. These can be downloaded or can be requested by calling our Customer Service Department. As a side note, it is unnecessary to prescan using TextBridge Classic if you are going to be doing a character recognition on a standard 8.5" by 11" piece of paper. On your driver screen, you can adjust the size of your crop frame by clicking on the Size box and selecting Letter. 7. Problem: When you try operating the scanner you get an error message stating "Scanner Not Ready" or "Scanner not connected." Cause: This error message occurs if the driver is unable to communicate with the scanner, or if the scanner is not powered on. Solution: It is very important that you make sure that the connections are right, that the scanner is getting power, and that the parallel port is set to the proper mode for the scanner. - Disconnect any printers or other parallel port devices from the scanner and connect the scanner directly to the parallel port by itself. This will determine if the error is coming from the scanner, or from a conflict with another device.
- Make sure the power adapter is plugged in and the outlet is working. The AC adapter will be warm if it is plugged into a good outlet.
- Check the cable connections in the back of the scanner and the computer to make certain they are tight. Verify that you are using the IEEE 1284 cable that came with the scanner and that it is connected from the port labeled "Computer" on the rear of the scanner to your computer's parallel port.
- Set the parallel port mode to EPP in the computer's BIOS. This solves many problems with parallel port scanners. For more information on the EPP mode, click here.
- It is possible to have a "Scanner Not Ready" message caused by a software conflict. Try operating the scanner in Safe Mode in a program like iPhoto Plus 1.2. If the scanner operates in Safe Mode, you are most likely experiencing a conflict with a software program loading in Windows. For information on booting into Safe Mode (Windows 95/98 Only) click here.
- If the computer does not have an EPP mode (some old 486s don't), we suggest that you do one of the following:
- (Easy) Exchange the 600 III EP Plus for a 1200 III SP which attaches to a 16-bit ISA SCSI card that comes with the scanner.
- (Difficult -- Only for users familiar with IRQ/DMA Issues) Purchase an enhanced parallel port interface card such as the SIIG Parallel Pro Enhanced Parallel Port.
Note: If you choose to buy a second parallel port and experience difficulty installing it, you must contact the manufacturer of the card if you need help with installation or configuration. 8. Problem: The printer does not operate normally when plugged into the back of the scanner, but does work correctly when attached directly to the computer's parallel port. Possible error messages are "out of paper" and "check your connections," or it appears that the print job is sent but nothing prints out. Cause: There could be a connection issue between the scanner and printer. Solution: Check the following points for a possible connection issue. - What is the length of your printer cable? The longer your cable is the more likely it is that the signal is getting weak before it reaches the printer. Try to have the shortest length of cable possible. Measure the distance from your scanner to where your printer will be located. Use a cable that is as close as possible to that length.
- Make sure that your printer cable is a high quality cable. It should have the IEEE 1284 rating printed on the side of the cable.
- Count the pins coming from the ends of the printer cable. Make sure you have 25 pins. If you have any less your cable may be incompatible or sub-standard.
9. Problem 1: When a scan is initiated an error occurs stating "IplugTW an error has occurred in your application." This problem occurs in the iPhoto Plus program. Problem 2: When a scan is initiated an error occurs stating "Twunk_16 an error has occurred in your application." This error occurs in iPhoto 4.0, Picture Publisher or TextBridge. Cause: These errors are usually caused by a software conflict originating from the SYSTEM.INI file, but they can also be caused by installing old drivers over new ones or by the scanner not getting power. Solution 1: Verify the driver version you are using. If you had downloaded an older driver, such as the 2.4 update, and installed it, you may have overwritten a newer version of the driver available on the latest CDs that come with the scanner. CD part number: 95-000-20780 Rev. 1.0 = Driver Version 3.0 CD part number: 95-000-20781 Rev. 1.0 = Driver Version 3.1 CD part number: 95-000-20782 Rev. 1.0 = Driver Version 3.2 If your CD matches the ones above, and you have downloaded a driver and installed it, you will want to remove your TWAIN and Twunk files and reinstall your CD. - Click on "Start" and select "Find."
- Select "Files or Folders" and type in "twain twunk" (without the quotes).
- When the files are displayed, click on "Edit" and "Select All."
- After the files are highlighted, select "File" and "Delete."
- Re-install the driver from the CD.
Solution 2: Check the SYSTEM.INI file for the conflicting file and correct it if necessary. Also, make sure the power supply is connected to the scanner and is plugged in to a good outlet. - In Windows 3.1x, Click on "File" then click on "Run." In Windows 95/98, click on "Start" and select "Run."
- Type "sysedit" and click OK. This will bring up a series of windows in the System Configuration Editor.
- Close the first three windows: AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, and WIN.INI.
- The fourth window is the SYSTEM.INI. Scroll to the [BOOT] section. (Note: Do not go to the [BOOT DESCRIPTION] section.) Look for the line that says "system.drv=." Be sure that the line says "system.drv=system.drv." If the line says "system.drv=atmsys.drv," change it to read "system.drv=system.drv."
- Close the SYSTEM.INI. When it prompts to save the changes click "Yes." Click on File and choose Exit.
- Shut down and restart the computer.
- After the computer restarts, try another scan.
10. Problem: Scanned images have vertical or horizontal lines running through them. Cause: Lines running through images are usually caused by bad connections or not having the parallel port set to EPP mode. Solution: Check for proper connections and set the parallel port to EPP mode in the BIOS. - Disconnect any printers or other parallel port devices from the scanner and connect the scanner directly to the parallel port by itself.
- Try operating the scanner in Safe Mode in a program like iPhoto Plus 1.2. If the scanner operates in Safe Mode, you are most likely experiencing a conflict with a software program loading in Windows. For information on booting into Safe Mode, click here.
11. Scanner light stays on all the time. Cause: The scanner does not have an on/off switch. The light is activated by a program that can control the light in Windows 95/98. Solutions for Windows 95/98 users: - Verify that the Watchdog program is running by pressing the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys on your keyboard once simultaneously. (Pressing these keys twice will cause your computer to reboot.) In the Close Program window, you should see an item called Watchdog. If it is not there, try rebooting the computer and check again. If it is still not there, reload your scanner driver.
- Make sure the computer has shut down properly. If the Watchdog program is shut down after a scan, either on purpose or by the computer being shut off without going through the Shut Down procedure, then it will not have the chance to turn off the light. It will not harm the light to be on, and a normal Shut Down procedure will reset the Watchdog program so that it may turn off the light.
- There is no program to control the light in Windows 3.1x due to the limitations of that operating system. On computers using Windows 3.1x, the light will remain on unless the power adapter is unplugged or turned off by a power strip. The lamp has been designed to stay on indefinitely, and it will not harm the scanner or the light if it is left on.
12. A Fatal Exception Error 06 occurs when using TextBridge Classic or an image editing program like iPhoto Plus. Cause: Fatal Exception Errors are usually caused by a software conflict. In the case of TextBridge Classic or an image editing program like iPhoto Plus, it is possible to get a Fatal Exception Error if the TWAIN driver wasn't correctly identified during setup of TextBridge Classic. Solution: Correctly choose the TWAIN driver in TextBridge Classic. Use the steps below: - Start the TextBridge program by clicking on its under the TextBridge Classic program group.
- In the TextBridge program, click on File and Select "Setup Scanner Source."
- You will see a dialog box and be prompted to "Choose the Type of Scanner Driver You Wish To Install."
- Choose TWAIN from the list of driver types.
- A box will display showing your TWAIN sources. Choose F/B Scanner (EPP II) from the list and click on "Select."
- TextBridge will now prompt you to test the scanner interface. This is unnecessary. Click on "Exit" to return to the program.
- You may now scan in TextBridge without a Fatal Exception Error.
13. During a scan, the error message "Integer divide by 0" occurs. Cause: This error is caused by a minor bug with driver version 3.0. The bug allows the resolution slider control on the Scanner Setup screen to be set lower than 100 dpi, which is the driver's lowest possible resolution. As illustrated below, a resolution under 100 makes the image size 0 KB and causes the "divide by 0" error message. Solution: There are two ways to solve this problem. The first is to simply set the resolution at a value the scanner driver can recognize (100, 200, etc.). Since this is a bug with the driver, the other choice would be to delete the TWAIN and Twunk files and install a different version of the driver, such as version 2.2 or 3.22. |
