* [Asterisk]

1. In writing, asterisks are used to call attention to footnotes or stand for omitted words/characters. 2. In computers, asterisks are "wildcards" and are used in file and directory searches. Typing "*.jpg" will show any file ending with ".jpg". Also known as star, as in star-dot-star or "*.*".

@ [At Sign]

1. In writing, symbol used for pricing items, such as 4 @ $5 each. 2. In computers, symbol commonly used to separate an on-line handle or name from the on-line location in an internet or e-mail address. Example: [email protected].

~ [Tilde]

1. In writing, used as an accent mark in Spanish. 2. In TextBridge Classic, the tilde is used to represent characters that were not recognized by the OCR program.
