"A Device Attached To The System Is Malfunctioning" followed by "Lead45.dll Is Corrupt"

Description:

You get an error message saying "A device attached to the system is malfunctioning" when you try to start Picture Publisher. After clicking OK, you get an error message saying "Lead45.dll has been corrupted."

Cause:

When installing Micrografx Picture Publisher, the installation needs to copy a file called Lead45.dll into your Windows directory. Lead45.dll is a generic file that comes bundled with many programs. The Picture Publisher CD installs Lead45.dll at C:\windows\lead45.dll. America Online and other programs install lead45.dll at C:\windows\system\lead45.dll. When you have two copies of the file installed in different locations, the Windows 95/98 Registry doesn't know which one to use and you get the above error message.

Solution:

  1. Click the Windows 95/98 START button and select Find Files Or Folders.
  2. Type in lead45.dll and press the Find Now button.
  3. Windows will find two copies of lead45.dll. Highlight the copy that is in the C:\windows\system Folder.
  4. Press the DEL key on your computer to move the extra file to the Recycle Bin.

The location of the lead45.dll installed by Picture Publisher is recorded in the Windows 95/98 Registry. All programs that use this file will automatically use this remaining lead45.dll file.
