Once you have installed Text Bridge Classic in Windows 95 and Registeredyour Word Processing Application, you are ready to use the program. Thistutorial will guide you through Scanning and Recognizing text using theWindows 95 Wordpad. The techniques used here are nearly identical withother programs so you should be able to use Text Bridge Classic with otherWord Processors after working through this tutorial. PreparationYou will need the following for this tutorial: 1. An operable Twain Compliant scanner with driver installed on thehost computer. 2. Text Bridge Classic installed and Instant Access OCR running minimizedon your Taskbar. 3. A suitable 8.5" x 11" text document to scan. Preferablysomething printed on a laser printer or a professional printing press. The document should be text only, no lines, graphics or forms. (You canscan documents with lines and graphics, but Text Bridge Classic will notpick them up. The program will probably insert incorrect characters inplace of graphics.) Procedures1. Launch the Windows 95 Wordpad. Click Start, select Programs, Accessoriesand click on Wordpad. 2. Open the Wordpad File Menu and click TextBridge OCR. If you do notsee TextBridge OCR on the File Menu, you did not start Instant Access OCRprior to starting Wordpad. 3. After Text Bridge starts up, click the GO button. This will causethe Twain user interface to appear. 4. Set the Scan Mode to Lineart, the Resolution to 300 DPI and makethe cropping frame to full page size. (Shortcut: Click on the SettingsMenu, select Quick Settings and click OCR to accomplish all three stepsat once). 5. Since we are scanning a full page, there is no reason to prescan.(The purpose of prescanning is to give you a low resolution image whichthen allows you to set the cropping frame.) 6. Click the Scan button and wait while the scanner scans your textdocument. After the page is scanned, the image will be sent to Text BridgeClassic. 7. Text Bridge Classic will then ask you if you have another page. Forour tutorial, we’re just doing one page, so click the End button. 8. Text Bridge Classic will now convert the scanned image into an editabletext file. If you have many misspelled words, the original document youchose may not have been suitable for OCR scanning. For a better understandingof the OCR process see Document # 2040, UnderstandingOCR. 9. You should now be back in the Windows 95 Wordpad with the text fromyour original document on screen. You can now edit the text, save it toa file or print it. 10. If you desire to use Text Bridge Classic with a different Word Processorthan the Wordpad, the procedures will be identical to the steps given above. NOTE: Text Bridge Classic does not work with Microsoft Word 7.5which is sold as Word 97 or bundled with Microsoft Office 97. To our knowledge, there is no OCR program that will work directly with Microsoft Word7.5 due to changes in Word from earlier versions. You can use the WindowsClipboard to get your text from Wordpad into Word 7.5. Below are the steps. Using the Windows Clipboard to Copy and Paste text between two programs1. In the Wordpad, use your mouse to highlight the text you wish tocopy to Microsoft Word 7.5. 2. Open the File Menu and click Copy. (Shortcut: Hold down the CTRLkey and press the C key) 3. Switch to Microsoft Word by clicking it’s icon on the Taskbar. 4. Open the File Menu and click Paste. (Shortcut: Hold down the CTRLkey and press the V key) 5. Your text is now in Microsoft Word 7.5 where you can edit the text, save it to a file or print it. |
