SCSI I.D. # and Termination Issues

When multiple devices are linked together from the single SCSI porton the Macintosh, this is called a SCSI chain or "daisy chain."Whether the scanner is the only SCSI device, or part of a chain, thereare a few things that may keep a scanner from properly communicating withyour Macintosh. They include: drivers, chain placement, SCSI I.D. #, andtermination.

Drivers

Older versions of the single-pass ISIS driver and Plug-ins will causethe error message "Scanner not found, please check the SCSI I.D"when PreScan or Scan is clicked. To see which driver version you have:

1. Double click on the Hard Disk icon to open it.

2. Locate your System Folder and double click it.

3. Within the System Folder, locate and double click the ExtensionsFolder.

4. In the Extensions folder, locate the "Mustek F/B Scan"and click it once to highlight it.

5. Click on the File menu and select "Get Info."

6. An information box will appear. Near the end of the list is Version.

If you have version 2.0, and you are using a 600 II SP, 800 II SP,800 SP or TwainScan II SP scanner, you will want to upgrade toversion 3.1 for best results. Consult Document #[3530] for information on obtaining updated drivers.

Chain Placement

It is best to have the scanner as the first item in a SCSI chain. Whenchaining devices together, try to use the original scanner cable to linkit to your Macintosh or other SCSI devices. Some adapter plugs and cableswill not link properly to the scanner, and your Macintosh will not be ableto locate it on the chain when you try to scan.

SCSI I.D. #

All items in a SCSI chain are identified by a SCSI I.D. number. Thisnumber represents the priority with which the device communicates withthe SCSI port. This number is usually set by a dial or switch on the unit.There are certain I.D. settings that cannot be used because they are beingused by the internal Macintosh devices. They are:

0–This SCSI I.D.# is used by the internal hard disk.

3–This SCSI I.D.# is used by the internal CD drive.

7–This SCSI I.D.# is used by the internal logic board.

Your Mustek scanner has a SCSI I.D. selector dial located on the rearof the unit near the 25-pin connector. This dial is preset to 6 at thefactory. In most cases, this dial will not need to be changed unless youhave another device using SCSI I.D.# 6.

Follow these steps to change the SCSI ID.

1. Turn off the scanner.

2. Locate the SCSI ID dial.

3. Use a small flat-head screwdriver to turn the dial to the desiredsetting. (You may use any setting not used by another device except for8 or 9.)

4. Turn the scanner back on. If you change the SCSI ID while in a scanningprogram, you will have to exit the program and re-launch it.

Termination

When linking multiple devices in a SCSI chain, you must use a terminatorat each end of the chain to ensure accurate transmission of data betweenthe Macintosh and the SCSI devices.

A Macintosh with an internal Apple hard drive has a built-in SCSI terminator.In most models, this serves as the terminator for one end of the chain.Some older models and portables do not have internal termination. Consultthe User’s Guide to find out if your model does or does not.

When running a Mustek scanner as the only device on the SCSI port ofa Macintosh with an internal terminator, no other termination should benecessary. If you are using the scanner with a model that does not haveinternal termination, or if you have the scanner at the end of a multipledevice SCSI chain, you will need a Passive SCSI terminator.

A terminator is a small connector that plugs into the last device ona SCSI chain. Mustek has terminators available to fit each of their scannermodels. To request a terminator, call our CustomerService Department.
